ATLANTA — When Jim West stepped up to the podium at Western Governors University’s Atlanta commencement, he wasn’t just there to deliver a speech. Moments after addressing the crowd, he crossed the same stage to accept a Master of Science in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance — a milestone decades in the making for a man who spent 35 years securing networks across more than 110 countries.

The October 10 ceremony at Gas South Arena in Duluth, Georgia, marked the culmination of a journey that began in a foster home in central Louisiana. West, now founder and CEO of TopCyberPro.com, was on his own by age 16, taught himself IT, and was managing an IT team at a Louisiana chemical plant by 21.

After 35 years in cybersecurity, West finished two degrees while overseas, taking on a challenge from his daughters
His career carried him through Iraq, Kuwait, Germany, and beyond. Along the way, he supported military missions worldwide, earned more than 100 certifications — including the CISSP with all three concentrations (ISSAP, ISSEP, ISSMP), CISM, C|CISO, and PMP — and was named Cyber Security Advocate of the Year in 2026. But one gap remained: no degree.
West raised his daughters, Mya and Tia, as a single father for 17 years. In 2024, they pointed out a simple fact — they would both hold degrees, and he never had. “That hit me hard,” West told the audience. “I couldn’t just tell them what perseverance looked like. I had to show them.”
WGU’s competency-based model proved the right fit, allowing West to translate decades of hands-on experience into academic credit. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 2024 while supporting U.S. military operations in the Middle East, then moved directly into the master’s program. He completed it in May 2026 — while working in Kuwait during the recent conflict with Iran.
“When people talk about working under pressure,” West said, “I usually say, ‘Well, I did submit assignments during missile alerts, so I may have taken that phrase a little too seriously.’”
Addressing fellow graduates, West framed their achievement as “proof you can adapt, sacrifice, and keep going when quitting would have been easier.” He reserved special thanks for his wife, Michelle: “Without her support, I would not be standing here today.”
Keep becoming the example someone else needs to see. Stay curious, keep leading, and always be a perpetual student.”— Jim West
West’s professional footprint extends beyond field work. He is the author of the “Beyond the CIA Triad” security model, which has been presented to professional audiences internationally. His writing has appeared in the ISACA Journal, and he holds both a B.S. (2024) and M.S. (2026) in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance from Western Governors University.
Why it matters: West’s trajectory from foster care to international cybersecurity leadership — capped by earning two degrees in his 50s while deployed overseas — underscores that expertise in the field doesn’t require a traditional academic path, and that technical mastery and formal education can reinforce each other at any career stage. His story also highlights how competency-based programs are opening doors for seasoned professionals who have the skills but lack the credentials.
