Areteworks Product Design Highlights 30 Years of Healthcare Design Experience

–

Co-founder Steven Liu contributes over 30 years of medical device design knowledge to the company’s UX/UI and human factors practice.

Areteworks Product Design, Inc., a firm focused on UX/UI design and human factors for medical devices, healthcare applications, and scientific instruments, is showcasing how co-founder Steven Liu’s more than three decades of healthcare design experience assists teams in building user-friendly products. Liu’s portfolio includes work on Class II and Class III medical devices, and his projects have been highlighted in Forbes ASAP and Smart Computing. Established in 2002, the company integrates clinical knowledge, UX/UI design, and human factors, adapting its efforts to each project’s specific requirements, schedule, and budget.

Liu started his career in 1992 at Hauser Design, at that time one of the top three medical product design companies in the United States. He subsequently worked with multiple startups before returning to healthcare and helping to establish Areteworks. “My goal has always been for my work to make a difference for people,” said Steven Liu, Co-founder of Areteworks Product Design, Inc. “At Areteworks, that starts with careful listening and grasping what individuals require, including the needs they don’t articulate. We translate that comprehension into medical devices and healthcare applications that feel natural and enable people to work more confidently.”

The Areteworks portfolio features contributions to Edwards Lifesciences’ HemoSphere, Medrad’s Mark 7 Arterion, and Thermo Fisher Scientific’s NanoDrop One and OMNIC Paradigm. These initiatives span critical care, medical procedures, and scientific workflows. For the Medrad Mark 7 Arterion, Areteworks crafted the touchscreen user interface; in a Bayer survey involving 125 customers across four countries, 97% stated they would endorse the system, and 92% perceived an improvement over their previous injector.

The company’s methodology draws on years of observation in operating rooms, ICUs, catheterization labs, and laboratories. “Conducting research, designing workflows, and building prototypes might seem costly and time-intensive,” said Liu. “With expertise and a structured method, much of this work can be accomplished both rapidly and thoroughly. We understand which inquiries to make and when deeper analysis is required. We concentrate on what each project demands, whether that involves a UX assessment, workflow design, or usability evaluations.”

Clients collaborate directly with Liu from research through to design, alongside their own product, engineering, and human factors teams. This consistency ensures that insights obtained during research remain connected to the ultimate design, with documentation to assist development and FDA submissions when necessary. Areteworks delivers user research, clinical workflow design, prototyping, and usability testing. When applicable, Anxiety Maps are used to pinpoint where confidence erodes and transform those findings into practical design choices.
