Their reporting is ambitious, polished, and deserves a wide viewership. Best of SNO, the initiative that honors the finest of that work, launches its 2026–2027 cycle on Sept. 21.
In the 2025–2026 academic year, SNO Sites received more than 15,000 story submissions for Best of SNO—averaging about 115 per school day—and republished over 2,000 of those pieces on BestofSNO.com. With new schools joining SNO monthly, this coming season is anticipated to be even busier.
"Best of SNO enables participating schools to gain almost immediate acclaim for their outstanding work, and it provides student journalists and advisers nationwide with a central resource for current examples of top-tier student journalism," said Kyle Phillips, who oversees the Best of SNO recognition program for SNO Sites, a company that offers publishing solutions to thousands of high school and college journalism programs.
Best of SNO serves as the writing element of SNO's Distinguished Sites recognition program. Each participating SNO Sites member can submit one eligible story daily throughout the academic year, and reviewers choose the top 10 to 15 percent for republication. Standards are intentionally high. Best of SNO is designed as both an honor and an instructional tool—rewarding quality work and offering students nationwide a benchmark to study and emulate.
The program also mirrors a larger shift in journalism. As local newspapers continue to vanish, student newsrooms are increasingly covering school boards, city councils, and elections that once depended on shrinking print staffs. Best of SNO brings that reporting a national audience and one of the few sources of nearly real-time feedback available in the field.
Anyone can now watch that readership take shape live through SNO Trending Stories (trending.snosites.com), a free, public tool that highlights the stories and topics gaining traction with readers around the country as they trend.
Best of SNO will start accepting submissions on Sept. 21, 2026. Participating schools may submit one eligible story each day during the academic year.
