A two‑time National Walleye Tour Champion is set to explain how digital education is transforming the way specialized knowledge is utilized across non‑traditional sectors.

From a Cattle Farm in Arkansas and Nail Salon Work to National Champion: Tom Huynh Presents a Fresh Framework for Fishing Instruction at TEDxFargo
The angler who captured consecutive National Walleye Tour titles will examine how organized digital learning can reshape the way specialized expertise is recorded, instructed, and implemented in fields that have not historically adopted formal teaching methods, with a particular emphasis on fishing instruction and forward‑facing sonar.
Tom Huynh’s journey to becoming a repeat National Walleye Tour Champion started a long way from the hub of professional walleye fishing.
Growing up on a cattle farm in rural Arkansas, Huynh spent his early years fishing from the edge of a small farm pond alongside his grandfather. He then relocated to the Fargo–Moorhead area to pursue a degree in Computer Information Systems at Minnesota State University Moorhead. A position in a nail salon, initially taken to fund his college education, turned into an unforeseen career that lasted more than twenty years.
Huynh eventually owned and still runs nail salons in the Fargo region, having spent many years largely away from fishing. When he returned to the sport seriously, he contributed an outsider’s viewpoint, a craftsman’s focus on detail, and a readiness to challenge beliefs that veteran anglers frequently considered settled.
That nontraditional strategy ultimately propelled him to the peak of professional walleye fishing, and now to the TEDxFargo platform.
Huynh is scheduled to speak at TEDxFargo CHARGE on Wednesday, July 29, at Brewhalla in Fargo, North Dakota. His presentation will delve into how structured, curriculum‑based digital education can revolutionize unconventional industries by documenting specialized expertise and transforming it into knowledge that can be taught, used, and expanded.
The concept emerged from Huynh’s experience co‑founding Tom Huynh University™, which systematizes his championship‑level knowledge into a progressive curriculum that teaches anglers how to use forward‑facing sonar technology, rather than presenting it as unrelated tips, device settings, or fishing spots.
“There has never been a shortage of information in fishing,” Huynh remarked. “What it has lacked is a genuine educational framework that enables anglers to grasp why something works, how to identify it, and when to apply it. This is about instructing people on how to think, not merely offering them another solution to replicate.”
This distinction has grown increasingly vital as forward‑facing sonar technology and other advanced marine electronics reshape both recreational and competitive fishing. Anglers now have unprecedented access to real‑time data beneath the surface, but possessing the equipment does not automatically confer the skill needed to interpret it effectively.
Huynh identified that gap early on.
Rather than treating forward‑facing sonar solely as a means of finding fish, he employed it to examine behavior, movement, and reactions. His method integrated sonar interpretation with precise boat handling, environmental awareness, and disciplined decision‑making.
Even though he launched his professional walleye career in his mid‑40s, considerably later than many of his younger rivals, Huynh advanced through the sport at an impressive rate. After claiming the National Walleye Tour Championship in both 2024 and 2025, he will aim to make history on Lake Sakakawea in a matter of weeks by becoming the first angler ever to secure three consecutive titles.
The same concepts behind those wins were then arranged into a structured digital curriculum. Rather than centering on isolated methods, the educational model is built around transferable principles like fish behavior, sonar interpretation, boat control, and real‑time decision‑making.
The curriculum has reached learners across more than 40 states and internationally, indicating that anglers are seeking more than just extra content. They want a systematic method for understanding and applying increasingly complex information.
“Being on the TEDxFargo stage feels surreal to me,” Huynh said. “My path hasn’t been straightforward, but every part of it—from my upbringing in Arkansas to working in nail salons and competing professionally—taught me about observation, learning, and the bravery to reinvent yourself.”
At TEDxFargo, Huynh will investigate a concept that extends beyond fishing: expertise becomes more valuable when it can be captured, organized, and taught in a way that enables others to think for themselves.
This idea holds relevance for any industry facing rapid technological shifts, a growing skills gap, and the difficulty of transferring specialized knowledge on a large scale.
TEDxFargo CHARGE is scheduled for July 29–30, 2026, at Brewhalla, 1702 First Ave. N., Fargo. Huynh is listed among the Wednesday presenters. Event and ticket information can be found at tedxfargo.com.
