Planned acquisition aims to broaden OpenTech’s international offerings with proven, low-cost smart-lock technology tailored for self storage

OpenTech Alliance, the self-storage PropTech frontrunner, revealed today that it has signed a Letter of Intent to acquire SAM Systems B.V., a Netherlands-based access technology firm behind an NFC latch lock. The transaction is anticipated to close in early Q4 of this year.
This agreement underscores OpenTech’s approach of identifying established technology on a global scale and bringing it to self-storage operators across different markets. The acquisition would bolster the company’s footprint in Europe and introduce a keyless entry lock priced under $100 per unit into its IoE platform. The product is expected to become available in Q1 2027.
“The market has answered the question of whether tenants and operators will embrace keyless access,” stated Robert A. Chiti, CEO of OpenTech Alliance. “We are entering the next phase, where owners are considering how to scale it across an entire portfolio. That requires choice in hardware, infrastructure and investment while maintaining a reliable experience for employees and tenants. SAM Systems has developed a solution that works and is very affordable.”
Industry data suggests that roughly 500,000 smart locks are now operational at self-storage facilities worldwide, pushing keyless access from an emerging idea toward an increasingly vital component of the tenant experience.
Designed specifically for self storage, the SAM Systems lock is a wireless smart lock that delivers simple, secure, and dependable smartphone access, powered by a combination of BLE and NFC. Its double-tap feature streamlines mobile entry: the first tap opens the app, and the second unlocks the unit immediately. Engineered for tough conditions, the lock features durable metal parts made from high-quality V2A stainless steel and carries an IP-55 water resistance rating.
Manufactured in Germany, the lock integrates core technology that has undergone over eight years of testing and proven use in thousands of devices.
Representatives from OpenTech and SAM Systems will meet with operators and showcase the technology at the Self Storage Association Fall Conference & Trade Show in Las Vegas (Booth 1321), September 9–10, and the FEDESSA Conference & Trade Show in Wiesbaden (Stand 5), September 22–24. For additional details, stop by the OpenTech booth at either event or contact the company today.
