Indoor air quality stands as an urgent concern for public health. A wide range of pathogens and pollutants travel through the air, and people are primarily exposed indoors, where spaces frequently lack adequate or appropriate ventilation. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identifies substandard indoor air as an environmental hazard that can worsen health outcomes, lower productivity, raise building maintenance expenses, and drive up other building-related costs. Despite these serious effects on health, well-being, and efficiency, the condition of indoor air continues to be largely hidden from those who breathe it.

Even with the health hazards tied to exposure to poor indoor air quality, there is currently no straightforward method for anyone to determine whether the air in a specific room is safe to breathe. Measuring variables such as carbon dioxide (CO2) levels can serve as a useful indicator for ventilation rates and infection risk, but once air-cleaning technologies are introduced into a space, CO2 alone tells only part of the story. The RSAAI aims to close that knowledge gap by providing a single score that integrates every layer of protection in a room—natural and mechanical ventilation, filtration, portable air purifiers, and air disinfection systems—revealing how much safer a room is compared to an unventilated baseline.

The RSAAI will be created through a joint effort among Public Health Action Network, RESET, and the Safer Air Project, combining knowledge in indoor air quality, lived experience, public health, and building performance, while building upon RESET’s existing Viral Index framework for measuring airborne infection risk.
This initiative reflects a mutual dedication among the three organizations to treat clean indoor air as a matter of environmental accessibility, acknowledging that purer indoor air can lower health risks and make shared areas safer and more inclusive for everyone.
