A newly launched scientific initiative is calling for volunteers to contribute to a body measurement database aimed at improving product design throughout Europe.

This initiative tackles a mounting issue for both research and industry: numerous body measurement databases used for designing vehicles, workplaces, medical devices, clothing, and consumer goods are decades old and no longer accurately represent Europe’s demographic makeup.

Data gathering is already underway at the initial two scanning sites: Weiterstadt near Darmstadt, Germany, and Lille, France. Further locations throughout Europe will be introduced as the initiative moves forward.

SizeEUROPE represents the first cross-border scientific anthropometric survey of its kind in Europe in many years. Employing a standardized methodology and a representative sampling approach, the project will generate a harmonized dataset, enabling direct comparisons of body measurements and shapes across various European populations for the first time.
The survey utilizes cutting-edge, contact-free 3D body scanners. Within just a few seconds, over 150 body measurements and each participant’s body shape are recorded in three dimensions. This measurement data is supplemented by a brief questionnaire. All information is gathered anonymously, adhering to internationally recognized standards such as ISO 7250, ISO 8559, and ASTM.
The resulting reference dataset will offer a new scientific foundation for Europe’s population, supporting ergonomics research, standards development, and product innovation across numerous industries, including automotive, aerospace, healthcare, apparel, furniture, and personal protective equipment.

The project is currently enlisting adult volunteers at its first scanning locations in Germany and France.
