SPI opens 2027 PS Maturity Benchmark survey as AI reshapes services sector

For two decades, professional services leaders have relied on hard data to measure their firms against the broader market. This week, that benchmark gets its next iteration — and for the first time, artificial intelligence takes center stage in the questionnaire.

SPI opens 2027 PS Maturity Benchmark survey as AI reshapes services sector

Service Performance Insight has opened the 2027 Professional Services Maturity Benchmark™ survey, its 20th annual study of professional services performance.

The stakes are higher than ever, according to the firm’s leadership. “For the past 20 years, Professional Services executives have depended on the PS Maturity Benchmark to set performance goals. 2027 will bring new challenges as the market continues to leverage AI.” — R. David Hofferberth

Service Performance Insight (SPI Research) has officially launched the 2027 Professional Services Maturity Benchmark™ survey, marking two decades of tracking how services organizations perform. The window for submissions is open now, closing on 18 December 2026, with the resulting analysis slated for release in February 2027.

Firms interested in participating can access the survey directly at https://spiresearch.com/reports/2027-ps-maturity-benchmark/.

The research scope spans five core operational areas: leadership effectiveness, client relationship management, talent development, service execution quality, and financial and operational performance. The goal is straightforward — give leaders a reliable yardstick to compare their organizations against industry peers while pinpointing where targeted improvements will move the needle most.

New for 2027, the survey digs specifically into how professional services firms are embracing AI — both in how they deliver their own work and in the AI-powered offerings they bring to clients. That addition reflects a market where generative tools are rapidly changing what “services” actually means.

“Leaders need a clear view of how their organization is performing and where improvement is possible,” said R. David Hofferberth, Managing Director of SPI Research. “By contributing to this year’s benchmark, firms help build that evidence and gain a useful basis for their own performance discussions.”

There’s no cost to take part. Every participant walks away with an SPI maturity scorecard, a 10-page Executive Insights Report, and a full copy of the 2027 Benchmark Report — a package valued at $2,795 — all free of charge.

Firms can submit their data online or download an Excel version from SPI’s website to coordinate input across internal teams before submitting. The confidential questionnaire takes roughly an hour to complete, and all responses must be in by 18 December 2026.

Why it matters: As AI redefines how professional services are delivered and sold, having a reliable, industry-wide baseline becomes more critical than ever. The 20-year history of this benchmark means this year’s data won’t just show where firms stand — it will reveal how the adoption of AI is shifting the competitive landscape in real time.
