The two‑time National Walleye Tour Champion will examine how organized digital education has the power to reshape how specialized knowledge is recorded, taught, and implemented across fields that have traditionally lacked formal training structures, with a particular emphasis on fishing education and forward-facing sonar.
Tom Huynh’s journey to becoming a back-to-back National Walleye Tour Champion started far from the heart of competitive walleye fishing.
Growing up on a cattle ranch in rural Arkansas, Huynh spent his early years fishing from the edge of a tiny farm pond with his grandfather. He later relocated to the Fargo–Moorhead region to pursue a degree in Computer Information Systems at Minnesota State University Moorhead. A position at a nail salon, initially taken on to fund his college education, turned into an unexpected profession spanning over twenty years.
Huynh eventually owned and still runs nail salons in the Fargo area, having spent years largely disconnected from fishing. When he returned to the sport with serious intent, he brought an outsider’s viewpoint, a creative eye for detail, and a readiness to challenge assumptions that veteran anglers frequently considered settled.
That nontraditional approach ultimately propelled him to the pinnacle of professional walleye fishing, and now to the TEDxFargo stage.
Huynh is scheduled to speak at TEDxFargo CHARGE on Wednesday, July 29, at Brewhalla in Fargo, North Dakota. His presentation will examine how organized, curriculum-based digital learning can transform nontraditional industries by capturing specialized expertise and converting it into knowledge that can be taught, implemented, and expanded.
The concept emerged from Huynh’s experience co-founding Tom Huynh University™, structuring his championship-level expertise into a progressive curriculum that teaches anglers how to utilize forward-facing sonar technology, rather than offering it as scattered tips, device configurations, or fishing spots.
“The fishing world has never been short on information,” Huynh said. “What it has lacked is a proper educational framework that helps anglers grasp why something works, how to identify it, and when to apply it. The real goal is to teach individuals how to think, not just hand them another solution to replicate.”
This distinction has grown increasingly critical as forward-facing sonar technology and other advanced marine electronics change both recreational and tournament fishing. Anglers now have extraordinary access to live data beneath the surface, but owning the equipment does not automatically grant the skills needed to interpret it correctly.
Huynn recognized that shortfall early on.
Rather than treating forward-facing sonar purely as a tool for finding fish, he employed it to observe behavior, movement patterns, and responses. His method integrated sonar interpretation with accurate boat handling, environmental awareness, and disciplined judgment.
Although he began his professional walleye career in his mid-40s, significantly later than many of his younger rivals, Huynh climbed the ranks of the sport with remarkable speed. After capturing the National Walleye Tour Championship in both 2024 and 2025, he will aim to make history at Lake Sakakawea in just a few weeks by becoming the first angler ever to secure three consecutive titles.
The same principles behind those wins were then compiled into a structured digital curriculum. Rather than focusing on isolated techniques, the educational model is built around transferable concepts like fish behavior, sonar reading, boat control, and live decision-making.
The curriculum has reached learners across more than 40 states and internationally, indicating that anglers are seeking more than just additional content. They want an organized method for understanding and applying increasingly complex information.
“Being on the TEDxFargo stage feels surreal to me,” Huynh said. “My path hasn’t been straightforward, but every chapter, from my upbringing in Arkansas to working in nail salons and competing at the highest level, taught me something about observation, learning, and the courage to reinvent yourself.”
At TEDxFargo, Huynh will explore a concept that extends beyond fishing: expertise becomes more valuable when it can be captured, structured, and taught in a way that enables others to think independently.
This idea is relevant for any industry facing rapid technological shifts, a widening skills gap, and the difficulty of scaling specialized knowledge effectively.
