Rapid Precision Castings Urges Earlier Legacy-Part Planning After Civil and Defense Engine Sustainment Announcements

Tooling-free investment casting gives aerospace sustainment teams another sourcing path when legacy suppliers or wax-pattern tooling are unavailable

ATLANTA, GA, UNITED STATES, September 4, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — DDM Systems | Rapid Precision Castings is urging aerospace OEMs, MROs, defense initiatives, and fleet-support entities to assess at-risk cast components well before exhausted stock, missing tooling, or a lost supplier turns a controllable supply challenge into a grounded-aircraft crisis.

This advice comes after two major aerospace-engine sustainment announcements.

Safran posted a 27.9% increase in civil-engine spare-parts revenue (USD) for the first half of 2026. The firm attributed much of that growth to the CFM56’s favorable workscope mix and comparison baseline. Expanding LEAP shop visits performed by third-party MROs along with broader workscope also played a role.

Separately, RTX disclosed that Pratt & Whitney was awarded a nearly $1.3 billion undefinitized Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity contract for fiscal-year 2026 F135 initial spare parts, deployable spare packages, depot lay-ins, and related support equipment.

Legacy casting risk often surfaces well before the part becomes urgently needed

Aerospace sustainment teams may face sourcing difficulties when:

• Original wax-pattern tooling has been lost, damaged, or decommissioned
• The original casting supplier has ceased operations or no longer supports the component
• Required volumes are too low to justify recreating traditional hard tooling
• Existing tooling introduces excessive cost or delays
• Controlled CAD, drawings, or process records are incomplete
• A replacement source must go through inspection, qualification, or approval

Technical readiness determines the available recovery path

An initial legacy-part review considers:

• Part number, nomenclature, and controlling revision
• Released CAD files and engineering drawings
• Alloy, heat-treatment, and casting specifications
• Required quantities and delivery schedule
• Critical dimensions and acceptance criteria
• Nondestructive examination and material-certification requirements
• Existing inventory, tooling, and supplier status
• Design-authority and source-approval responsibilities

Based on those inputs, DDM Systems can assess the need for a directly printed LAMP™ ceramic mold, a DirectPour™ finished-casting scope, or additional technical-data development before casting feasibility is determined.

Direct ceramic-mold printing changes how the mold is made. It does not approve a component for installation, establish missing design requirements, or replace applicable engineering and airworthiness controls. Design authority, source approval, first-article inspection, material qualification, traceability, and release-to-service obligations remain with the responsible organizations.
