A father of three uses his daughter’s type 1 diabetes diagnosis to explore how systems can hold onto complexity even after it no longer benefits patients

Krinsky presented under the TEDxBeverlyGrove 2026 theme “Reimagining the Possible,” using his own family’s situation since his daughter Rumijean was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes shortly before her first birthday. He recounted five years of overseeing her treatment within a medical‑device environment built around separate devices, separate websites, and separate alarms, and contended that much of that complexity can remain in place well after it stops being useful for the people who rely on it.

Krinsky described a key moment over coffee with a childhood friend who also lives with type 1 diabetes and had adopted an automated, open‑source method to help manage the condition. According to Krinsky, his friend’s daily management numbers had improved significantly, and the discussion became both a relief and a reality check. That conversation prompted Krinsky to ask why some patient‑driven innovations and simpler care experiences take so long to reach those who need them.
Krinsky argued that the same dynamic extends past healthcare into education, finance, and technology. Systems frequently add complexity to fix a problem, then hold onto that complexity long after it no longer serves the people within them.
Krinsky ended his talk by calling for “one device by 2030,” his stated rallying cry for a standard of diabetes care designed around patients rather than institutional complexity.
